Review: Primrose Bakery
Since I started working and more recently, living in London, there’s a lot more chances to try new bakeries and dessert-type places. So, I thought I’d introduce something a little different to the blog – reviews! I’m not a food critic, as much as I’d enjoy all that food, so these are just my opinions and nothing to be taken too seriously.
I visited the Covent Garden branch of the Primrose Bakery, a pretty little shop on the corner of Tavistock Street. The bakery was closed for the morning for a baking masterclass (must remember to check those out!) but opened again at 2:30pm. Even standing outside the bakery door, the smell of freshly baked cakes hits you and draws you in. Although the shop is only small, there is enough room for a few small tables by the window – a great place to enjoy a slice of cake, a hot drink and lots of people watching!
The Primrose Bakery’s cookbook was the first I bought a few years back when my cupcake addiction began. Despite making plenty of cupcakes using their recipes, I’d yet to try an actual shop-bought one, until now. They have a variety of cupcakes to choose from – earl grey, vanilla, lemon, to name a few. I ended up choosing two – one for me (Salted Caramel) and one for the boyfriend (Chocolate, naturally).
The Salted Caramel cupcake was beyond delicious, a vanilla base with a well hidden nutty, chocolatey, caramel filling, topped with a salted caramel frosting. I must say, I did find the frosting a little too sweet for my taste, but I’ve never been keen on a lot of sugar anyway. The Chocolate cupcake was given a big thumbs up by the boyfriend, his only criticism… not chocolatey enough!
The price of the cupcakes range from £2.25 – £3.50, depending on the flavour and decorations, which I guess is quite reasonable for a London-based bakery. Definitely a bakery to try if you’re ever in the area!
